The Laughing Cavalier
|
|
(1624, Wallace Collection) Portrait by Frans Hals, probably the best-known painting in Britain. It was bought by the 4th marquess of Hertford in Paris in 1865. Nothing is known of the sitter (who is smiling rather than laughing) except his age, inscribed on the canvas; he looks older than his 26 years.
