(1870–1950, kt 1919) Scottish *music-hall entertainer, born near Edinburgh and working as a miner before becoming known locally as a performer. When first seen in London, in 1900, he was an immediate success in his kilt, outrageous bonnet and profuse Highland trimmings, with a twisted knobbly stick. His songs, such as Roamin' in the Gloamin' and Keep right on to the end of the road, were written by himself. He was knighted for his work entertaining the troops in World War I.
