|
(Emilie Le Breton, 1853–1929, m. Edward Langtry 1874) Known as the Jersey Lily (she was born there, daughter of the dean of Jersey), she caused a sensation in 1881 when she became the first society woman to go on the stage, in She Stoops to Conquer at the Haymarket Theatre in London. An extra touch of excitement was added by her being a mistress of the prince of Wales, the future *Edward VII. From 1901 she had her own company, playing in London and on tour.
