Lanfranc
|
|
(c.1005–1089) Archbishop of Canterbury from 1070. Born in north Italy, he founded a monastic school at Bec in Normandy. There he became a trusted ally of William, the future Conqueror. He remained on excellent terms with him in England, where Lanfranc reformed and strengthened the church – though his measures did involve replacing most of the Anglo-Saxon clergy with Normans. After Lanfranc's death *William II left the see of Canterbury vacant for four years and plundered its revenues until the appointment of *Anselm in 1093.
