(London WC1) Britain's oldest surviving medical journal, published weekly. It was founded by a young surgeon, Thomas Wakley (1795–1862), who issued the first number in October 1823. He made it a crusading and controversial journal, as in his famous publication in 1851 of chemical analyses of a wide range of food and drink on general sale; the horrifying details led eventually to the Adulteration of Food and Drink Act of 1860. Today the journal has a large overseas circulation, the UK only accounting for about 20% of its readers.
