(1908–1986, kt 1975) Cartoonist, set designer and author. His 'pocket cartoons' in the Daily Express (from 1939) found humour in the affairs of the moment as seen through the eyes of his affectionately satirized upper-class characters, in particular Maudie Littlehampton. He wrote and illustrated several books (serious in intent, comic in approach) about English architecture and the community, the first of which was Progress at Pelvis Bay (1936). From 1951 he designed the sets for many theatrical productions, mainly of opera and ballet.
