Lambeth Palace
|
|
(London SE1) Residence of the archbishop of *Canterbury, on the south bank of the Thames almost opposite the Houses of Parliament. Archbishop Hubert Walter was the first to feel that England's chief prelate should have a base close to the centre of royal power in London; he began building at Lambeth in about 1200. The earliest surviving parts, including the Tudor gatehouse, are of the 15C. The palace was largely rebuilt in 1828–34 and was badly damaged by bombs in 1941.
