Lambeth Conference
|
|
Assembly of bishops of the worldwide *Anglican Communion under the chairmanship of the archbishop of *Canterbury. The first conference was held in 1876 at Lambeth Palace, which remained the venue until 1968 when the number of bishops attending became so great (462) that the assembly was moved to Church House, Westminster. In modern times the conference has settled into a pattern of convening every ten years. In 1978 and subsequently it has been held at the university of Kent in Canterbury, making possible a residential or collegiate dimension to the gathering.
