The Lady of Shalott
|
|
(1833, revised and reissued in 1842) One of *Tennyson's earliest Arthurian successes, about a mysterious lady in an island castle who glimpses Sir Lancelot passing by on his way to Camelot; she drifts down the river in pursuit of him but dies on the way. The jingling rhythm and repetitive rhymes make the poem attractive for reading aloud, but also bring to mind the nonsense verses of Edward Lear. A very popular painting by John William Waterhouse (The Lady of Shalott 1888, Tate Gallery) depicts the lady pale and adrift in her boat.
