(London WC2) Collection of anatomical specimens gathered by John Hunter (1728–93), a Scottish surgeon. The items, numbering more than 13,000 at his death, were selected to demonstrate the structure and function of organs in a wide range of animals. Owned by the Royal College of Surgeons, the collection suffered considerable damage from bombing in 1941. The Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery in Glasgow commemorates Hunter's elder brother.
