Ladbroke
|
|
Betting firm with origins in the village of Ladbroke in Warwickshire, where a horse trainer and his friend set up in the 19C as bookmakers. In London from the turn of the century, 'Ladbroke's' took bets placed on the telephone by rich account-holders – betting with cash was then illegal except at racecourses. The Betting and Gaming Act of 1960 made cash betting legal at licensed betting shops in the high street, and this was the opening which enabled Ladbroke to begin its rapid expansion.
