(b. 1939) The first man to sail non-stop and single-handed round the world, which he did in Suhaili in ten months from June 1968 to April 1969 – thus winning the Golden Globe, a trophy offered by the Sunday Times to whoever first achieved this feat. In 1994, with Peter Blake and six others, he set off from Brest in Enza New Zealand in an attempt on the Jules Verne Trophy; they successfully reduced the round-the-world time from the previous French record of 79 days, 6 hrs, 59 mins, 56 secs to 74 days, 22 hrs, 17 mins, 22 secs.
