(6000 in 1991) Town on the island of Mainland; administrative centre of Orkney. The massively proportioned *Romanesque cathedral (12–15C) was founded in 1137 by Rognvald, a *Viking ruler, in honour of his uncle Magnus – a man known for his piety who was murdered in 1116 and was then adopted as patron saint of the *Orkneys. Two skeletons found in the cathedral in 1926, one with a fractured skull, are assumed to be those of Magnus and Rognvald. The Bishop's Palace and the ruined Earl's Palace date from the 16C. The museum, in the 16C Tankerness House, covers some 5000 years of Orkney archaeology and history.
