Republic and member of the *Commonwealth since independence in 1979. These 36 coral islands in the Pacific, of which 17 are the Gilbert Islands, were visited by British merchant ships from the late 18C. In 1892 they were made part of the protectorate of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands (the Ellice Islands became independent as *Tuvalu).
