Kingston Lacy

(18km/11m NW of Bournemouth)
House built in red brick in 1663–5 for Sir Ralph Bankes whose previous family home (*Corfe Castle, a few miles to the south) had been destroyed after a famously brave defence by his mother against a parliamentary army. The original architect was Roger Pratt (1620–85, kt 1668), but the present stone-clad exterior and much of the interior, including the marble staircase, is the work of Charles *Barry in major alterations of 1835–41 for William John Bankes (whose superb collection of pictures is one of the great glories of the house).
