King's Cross
|
|
(London N1) Area named after a monument to *George IV, which stood briefly at the main crossroads of the district. Put up in 1836 (the king was on top of an 18m/60ft monument), the object caused so much hostility that it was down again by 1845. King's Cross Station was built in 1851–2 to a design by Lewis Cubitt (1799–1883). In November 1987 the King's Cross underground station was the scene of a disaster when a fire, starting beneath an escalator, resulted in 31 deaths.
