(1886) Adventure story by Robert Louis *Stevenson. David Balfour, a Scottish boy in his late teens, is kidnapped and sent off to slavery in America by his uncle Ebenezer, who has usurped David's inheritance. The year is 1751, just after the failure of the *'45 Rebellion. Shipwreck saves David from the slavers and brings him into contact with Alan Breck, a spy for the *Jacobite cause. Together the pair have a series of dangerous brushes with the law in Scotland before David exposes his uncle and recovers his estate, while Alan is promised safe passage to France. Catriona (1893) was a sequel, again involving David and Alan.
