Humpty Dumpty
|
|
Egg-shaped nursery-rhyme character who falls off a wall and cannot be put together again (because no one can mend a broken egg). The rhyme first appeared in print in the early 19C, but many European countries have egg-characters with similar double names, and rhymes and games about them are probably very ancient. Humpty's fame in Britain derives largely from his long conversation with Alice in *Through the Looking-Glass.
