Kenwood House
|
|
(London NW3) House on Hampstead Heath, built in about 1700 but owing its present appearance to the remodelling by Robert *Adam in 1767–8 for the 1st earl of Mansfield. Adam added the entrance portico on the north side and the superb library on the east, which balanced the already existing orangery. In 1925, when Kenwood was threated with demolition, it was bought by the 1st earl of Iveagh (Edward Cecil Guinness, 1847–1927), who filled it with his own outstanding collection of pictures and bequeathed to the nation both house and contents – known together as the Iveagh Bequest. The landscape garden, dating from the 18C, is London's main location for outdoor concerts.
