(6km/4m S of Coventry) Imposing ruin of one of the most powerful English castles of the Middle Ages. It was held by *John of Gaunt and later by the earl of *Leicester, who in 1575 entertained Elizabeth here for the most lavish festivities of her reign; he is thought to have spent £100,000 making the accommodation suitable for the queen and then another £1000 for each of the 19 days of merrymaking.
