Fanny Kemble
|
|
(Frances Anne Kemble, 1809-93) Actress and author who delighted London from 1829 in performances both of tragedy and comedy, and subsequently gave pleasure to generations of readers with her fresh and lively journals and volumes of autobiography; these covered not only her early years of success in London but also her experiences in America as the wife of a plantation owner in Georgia (she left him because of her passionate opposition to slavery). She was a member of England's leading theatrical family of the time; her father (Charles Kemble, 1775-1854), her uncle (John Philip Kemble, 1757-1823) and her aunt (Mrs *Siddons) were merely the best known of her many relations on the stage.
