(1704–64) Lancashire-born inventor of the flying shuttle, patented in 1733, which could pass mechanically back and forth across the loom, representing a major step forward in the mechanization of weaving and thus in the development of the *cotton industry. It was much faster than a hand-operated shuttle, and a single weaver could now work a broad-cloth loom which had previously required one on each side.
