Journey's End

(1928) The most successful British play about World War I, written by R.C. Sherriff (1896–1975) who himself served in the trenches from 1917. Set in a claustrophobic dugout before a big offensive, it struck home to audiences because of the simple reality of its characters – in particular Raleigh, who has come straight from school into this hellish environment, and Stanhope, the brave captain whom he hero-worships but who has lost his nerve.
