(1878–1961) Welsh painter, younger brother of Gwen *John, who moved from Wales in 1894 to study at the Slade School of Art in London. In the early years of the 20th century was seen as Britain's leading bohemian. He lived a wandering life – he was fascinated by Gypsies – and he often painted his favourite model (Dororthy McNeill, to whom he gives the Gypsy name Dorelia) as a lone traveller in a landscape. By the 1920s he also had a thriving career as a fashionable portraitist.
