(1930-98) Yorkshire-born poet whose imagery is vividly cruel and violent – in keeping with the everyday life of the wild animals which were, in the tradition of fable, his main characters. He received immediate admiration for his first collection, The Hawk in the Rain (1957), and for its successor, Lupercal (1960). His best-known subsequent volume has been Crow (1970). He also much for children, and his story The Iron Man (1968, entitled The Iron Giant in the USA) has achieved the status of a classic.
