Jane's Fighting Ships
|
|
Annual publication giving an illustration and technical details of every ship of significance in every navy of the world. Its originator was Fred T. Jane (1870–1916), whose interest in the subject dated from the drawings he made, as a 17-year-old schoolboy, of eight battleships involved in a bombardment of Alexandria. A career as a naval journalist enabled him to continue sketching warships and in 1898 he published All the World's Fighting Ships, with a silhouette index to help in identification. It was such a success that an updated edition was published each year. The title was soon shortened to Fighting Ships and from 1901 sketches were replaced by photographs. Since 1909 there has been a companion volume, All the World's Aircraft.
