Henry Hudson

|
(d. 1611) Explorer commemorated in the names of the Hudson River, Bay and Strait. His first three expeditions (1607–9) were to the north of Russia, to find a *northeast passage to China. He diverted on the third to look for a *northwest passage, and on this occasion sailed 240km/150m up the Hudson River (as far as present-day Albany) before deciding that it did not lead through to the Pacific. He sailed west on the Discovery for his final voyage in April 1610, and spent the following winter in James Bay, the southernmost pocket of Hudson Bay. In June 1611, when they had broken out of the ice, the crew mutinied and set Hudson, his son and seven others adrift in a small boat. No more was heard of them.
