James V
(1512–42) King of Scotland from 1513; son of James IV and Margaret Tudor; married Madeleine of France (1537, she died later that year) and Mary of Guise (1538).
With a one-year-old James V on the throne after the disaster of *Flodden, Scotland was faced with a long minority during which there was constant friction between factions favouring alliance with England or with France.

James himself, in control from 1528, took the side of France and the papacy against his uncle, *Henry VIII (Margaret Tudor was Henry's elder sister). In 1542 Henry sent an army against Scotland and won an easy victory at Solway Moss. James died three weeks later in Falkland palace. For the second time running the Scottish crown passed to an infant; James's daughter, *Mary Queen of Scots, was six days old (see the *royal house of Scotland).
