Jacobite
|
|
(from Jacobus, Latin for James) A supporter of *James II after his deposition in 1688 (or of his descendants after his death in 1701) as the rightful king of both Scotland and England. Support was always strongest in Scotland, the *Stuart homeland, where both the *'15 and *'45 Rebellions began. To a Jacobite James II was James VII and II (i.e. James VII of Scotland and II of England). By the same token his son James *Stuart was James VIII and III.
