Jack the Giant Killer
|
|
Hugely successful story compiled in about 1700 from various folk tales. Jack is a cheeky Cornish lad in the time of King *Arthur who by various clever tricks rids Britain of all its giants. One of these, unable to see Jack because he is wearing a coat of invisibility, roars the memorable lines (partly used also by Shakespeare in King Lear), Fe, fi, fo, fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman, Be he living or be he dead I'll grind his bones to be my bread.
