(40,000 in 1991) Town on the river Ness at the head of the Moray Firth; administrative centre of the Highland region of Scotland. Its commanding position made it one of the chief strongholds of the *Picts. Apart from the 16C Abertarff House and the 18C High Church, the main buildings today are all of the 19C – the castle, the Town House and the episcopal St Andrew's cathedral.
