; or, Mirth and marvels, by Thomas Ingoldsby, Esquire Humorous poems on medieval subjects, with rattling rhythms and rhymes, written by a clergyman, R.H. Barham (Richard Harris Barham, 1788–1845), and published from 1837. The best known is The Jackdaw of Rheims, about a cheeky bird who steals the cardinal's ring but then repents of his crime and dies years later 'in the odour of sanctity'.
