infant prodigies
|
|
In recent years childhood precocity in mathematics has been to the fore: first Ruth Lawrence (b. 1971, A level at 10, undergraduate at Oxford at 12) and then Ganesh Sittampalam (b. 1979, A level at 9, undergraduate at the university of Surrey at 11, Britain's youngest-ever graduate at 13, with first-class honours). But the most famous infant prodigy in English history was an actor, Master William Betty (1791–1874). Known as the young Roscius (from the most admired actor of ancient Rome), he caused hysteria among London audiences when he was only 13. Pitt even adjourned the House of Commons so that members could see Master Betty as Hamlet.
