The death of young babies was a familiar tragedy in past centuries at all levels of society (see Queen *Anne for an example), and it is only in the 20C that the figures have been drastically reduced by improved medical care. The number of deaths in the first 12 months of life have fallen from 142 out of every 1000 babies in 1900 to just 8 per 1000 at the end of the century. The average *life expectancy at birth is now 72 years for boys and 78 for girls.
