The Independent
|
|
The first serious national daily newspaper to be established in Britain in the 20C. Conceived in some secrecy by three journalists on the Daily Telegraph (one of whom, Andreas Whittam Smith, became the paper's first editor), it was launched in 1986 in direct competition with the Times, Telegraph and Guardian. The new paper was committed to independence in two forms – financial (the money was raised from some 30 City institutions so that there should be no press baron in control) and political (readership research had revealed a widespread desire for a newspaper of no particular allegiance). A sister paper, The Independent on Sunday, was first published in 1990.
