Greater London
(6,680,000 in 1991) Area consisting of 32 London *boroughs, established by the London Government Act of 1963 (effective from 1965). Those parts of neighbouring counties to which London's conurbation had spread were now added to the central districts previously controlled by the *London County Council. The new area of some 1660sq.km/610 sq.m was about 56km/35m east to west and 45km/28m north to south. The Greater London Council (GLC) was the highest local authority for this region from 1 April 1965 to 30 March 1985, when its function was brought to an end under the provisions of the London Government Act of 1983 (after a high-profile clash of wills between the Labour leader of the council, Ken Livingstone, and the Conservative prime minister, Margaret Thatcher).

For the next decade and more Greater London was controlled by the individual boroughs operating as a single-tier system of local government, until the reinstatement of a city-wide authority in 2000 in the form of a London Assembly and an elected mayor.
