Doc Martens
|
|
Britain's best-selling brand of footwear, manufactured in Northamptonshire by the R. Griggs Group. The concept of an air-cushioned sole was developed in 1945 in Germany by Dr Klaus Maertens. The Griggs family firm bought a world-wide licence, anglicized the name and in 1960 launched the first Doc Martens. They soon became part of the uniform of *skinheads; a giant pair was worn by Elton John in Tommy; and more recently DMs, characterized by ribbed soles and leather stitching, have become widely fashionable.
