Dixons
|
|
By far the largest retailer on Britain's high streets of electronic, photographic and electrical consumer goods. The enterprise began in 1937 when Charles Kalms (1897–1978) opened the first Dixons photographic studio in Southend. His business prospered greatly during the war, when the families of people away from home in the services were steady customers. Later Kalms specialized in the sale of cameras and accessories, building up a large mail-order business. The company grew with the electrical and electronic markets, and through acquiring its main competitors. It went public in 1962.
