The times during which it is illegal in Britain to kill game birds or fishes. People are naturally more aware of the other period, the season during which they may legally shoot or fish, and those are the dates given here: Grouse: August 12 – December 10 Partridge: September 1 – February 1 Pheasant: October 1 – February 1 The law also forbids the shooting of these birds in England and Wales on any Sunday and on Christmas Day.

The two so-called game fishes may be caught (with some local variations) during the following periods: Salmon: February 1 – October 30 Trout: March 1 – September 30 Other freshwater fishes, known collectively as 'coarse', have no close season in southwest England but are protected during March and April in Yorkshire and from March 15 to June 15 in the rest of the country.
