(1901–2000, DBE 1991) Romantic novelist credited with the greatest number of books by any British author (some 642 in all) and phenonenal worldwide sales (said to be approaching a billion copies). Her rate of production meant that a new book was finished every two or three weeks, dicatated to her secretary from a sofa. The purpose of each was, in her own words, 'to give Morality, Beauty and Love to the world'. She was also known as an advocate of alternative medicine and health foods ('Due to my special Vitamins and Honey our marriage lasted for twenty-eight perfect years'). Certainly her own energy in her nineties was a powerful testimonial.
