(British Telecommunications) After the installation in 1879 of the first British telephone exchange (in London's Coleman Street), the *Post Office established itself as the largest of the rival suppliers of telephone lines and services. By 1912 the private companies had dropped out and the Post Office had a monopoly except in one or two places where the municipal authorities ran the service (most notably in *Hull). In 1981 the telephone system was made independent as British Telecom, and in 1984 it became the first public agency to be *privatized.
