Booker

One of Britain's largest companies, specializing in the production and distribution of food. It derives from a business which two brothers, George and Richard Booker, set up in 1834 in Demerara (see *Guyana) to trade in sugar; their ships sailed to Liverpool, where their elder brother Josias had established an office in 1829. John McConnell joined Booker Bros as a clerk in Demerara in 1846 and eventually became a partner; the company was known as Booker McConnell until 1986. In 1968 it launched a very successful promotional venture, the *Booker Prize.
