Enid Blyton

(1897–1968) Prolific bestselling children's author, commercially more successful than any other in Britain in the 20C. Her best-known series featured the *Famous Five, followed in 1949 by stories about the Secret Seven for younger children. Her most successful character was *Noddy – the main cause of a boycott of her work for many years by librarians, who argued that her books showed racial prejudice and were too undemanding. Nevertheless in the 1990s she is consistently among the two or three childrens' authors most often borrowed from public libraries.
