Barbican

(London EC2)
Large development in the *City, completed in 1982, on an area to the north of St Paul's which had been devastated in the *Blitz. Designed by Chamberlain, Powell and Bon, the concrete tower blocks provide apartments (rarities in this City of offices). The Barbican Centre includes an art gallery, a concert hall (home to the *London Symphony Orchestra), and a theatre which is the London base for the *Royal Shakespeare Company. The Centre, with its many-tiered public areas, rapidly became established as the hardest place in London to find one's way around.
