Granite island, rising steeply to 340m/1114ft off the west coast of Scotland at the southern end of the Firth of Clyde. Occasionally inhabited in the past, it is now a bird sanctuary. Its position on the sea route between Belfast and Glasgow gave it the nickname Paddy's Milestone, and it has been famous as the source of the best granite for *curling stones (sometimes known as Ailsas).
