Hymns Ancient and Modern
|
|
(1861) Collection of hymns compiled by Henry Baker (1821–77), with William Henry Monk (1823–89) as the musical editor (each hymn was printed with its tune). It rapidly became the hymnal most used in Anglican churches, even though Baker himself had controversially *Anglo-Catholic views; he caused some offence by including a hymn of his own to the Virgin Mary which begins 'Shall not we love thee, Mother dear'. The volume has been considerably added to (and subtracted from) in subsequent editions.
