Hush-a-bye, baby

, on the tree top
The most popular lullaby in Britain, first printed in Mother Goose's Melody of about 1780 and sung to a version of *Lilliburlero. There have frequent attempts to find a historical origin for the baby and its fall from the tree top. The rhyme probably reflects an old country habit of suspending a cradle from a branch to have it rocked by the wind.
