The Hunting of the Snark
|
|
(1876) Nonsense poem by Lewis *Carroll in eight 'fitts' (see *Gawain and the Green Knight). A shipload of characters, led by the energetic Bellman, set off to find a Snark. Unfortunately the Baker chances upon the only dangerous kind and therefore vanishes – 'For the Snark was a Boojum you see' (the last line of the poem, and the one which Carroll said inspired him to write all that went before). The illustrations are by Henry Holiday (1839–1927).
