hospice movement

The provision of hospices for the terminally ill, particularly those dying of cancer. In this modern sense St Christopher's, at Sydenham in southeast London, is often quoted as the first hospice; it was founded in 1967 by Cicely Saunders (b. 1918, DBE 1980) and has been widely imitated. In 1969 St Christopher's extended its activities to home care. Whether in the hospice or the patient's home, an important innovation has been the use of drugs to prevent rather than relieve pain. Since 1977 St Christopher's has run an information service, which by the early 1990s was listing more than 100 independent in-patient hospices in Britain. There are also now hospices for those with Aids.
