Horniman Museum
|
|
(London SE23) Ethnographic collection started by a tea merchant, Frederick Horniman (1835–1906), as he travelled the world during the 1870s. He gave it to London in 1901 as a free museum, in an *Art Nouveau building designed for the purpose by C. Harrison Townsend (1851–1928). Horniman was interested (rather ahead of his time) in 'primitive' art, and in musical instruments – two areas in which the museum has continued to improve its holdings.
